Marcel Wengler studied at the "Conservatoire Royal de Musique" in Brussels and was for
many years the assistant of Hans Werner Henze at the Cologne Music Academy. His mentors
for conducting included Igor Markevitch and Sergiu Celibidache, the latter in particular
having a great influence on him. In 1978, Marcel Wengler won the first prize in the
International Competition for Conductors in Rio de Janeiro; his competitors were selected
candidates from the USA, Soviet Union, Israel, Japan, Canada and European countries. He
has conducted over hundred works for many broadcasting companies, including a number of
first performances. He has been invited to conduct in England, France, Germany and in
Lisbon, Moscow, Leningrad and Rio de Janeiro.
Marcel Wengler is also known for his compositions, however. He has written around 80
works so far in a variety of genres - symphonies, concertos, stage works, chamber and ballet
music. His musical Rex Leo was recently performed in a new production in the Graz opera
house. The world-première of his cello-symphony took place in Lissabon and his viola-
concerto has been performed by Garth Knox and the Philharmonic Orchestra Nürnberg.
Over the last few years Marcel Wengler has composed a number of film music scores, which
he has conducted himself in Berlin, Munich, London, Cologne, Paris and Hamburg. He has
recorded a series of CDs comprising more than twenty symphonic works by Luxembourg
composers.
