A Winged Creature

The title evokes a dreamlike vision of a being, which is both sublime and disturbing (angelic
and monstrous). The form of the composition, as ambiguous as the title, is continually, yet
inconclusively, striving for shape. The only unifying musical element is a gesture, which is
representative of fluttering of wings. This gesture is transformed and varied throughout the
six sections of the piece, which can be characterised as follows: 1. Apparition, 2. Flight, 3.
Legend, 4. Dance, 5. Meditation, 6. Procession. The piece was commissioned by the Academy
of St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra.
