Prague Chamber Orchestra

The Prague Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1951. In the course of 49 years of its
existence, it has established itself as one of the world's most reputable chamber
ensembles through its interpretation of the classical repertoire in particular and
today it ranks among the most important representatives of the Czech art of musical
interpretation. Its current repertoire ranges from the baroque to the 20th century;
compositions by living composers appear often in its programme. The orchestra is
frequently a guest at the world's festivals, and gives regular concerts in the
Rudolfinum Hall in Prague, the Lincoln Centre in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo,
the Musikverein in Vienna and at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.
Among the Orchestra's soloists are such names as Arturo Benedetti-Michelangeli, Paul
Badura-Skoda, Salvatore Accardo, Barbara Hendricks, Heinrich Schiff, Barry Tuckwell,
Hans Jörg Schellenberger, Uto Ughi and the Beaux Arts Trio. The Orchestra has
recorded hundreds of titles for Supraphon, Denon, BMG, Decca, Telarc and others for
which it was awarded the Supraphon's Golden Record, the Wiener Flötenuhr and the
Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros.
Every year the Orchestra gives approximately 80 concerts, the majority of which are
held abroad. In Prague it gives its prestigious for-subscribers-only concert series
in the Dvorak Hall at the Rudolfinum.
Since 1991 the body has run without any state subsidies. At the turn of the millennium,
the Orchestra is intent on reinforcing its original mission, i.e. to further the
tradition of Czech music, and thus claim a fixed place among the great European
performing bodies of the 21st century.
