Dimitris Marinos was born in the island of Zakynthos, Greece, where he started to play the
mandolin at the age of seven in the mandolin orchestra of Zakynthos with the teacher Stathis
Arvanitakis. After several musical experiences mainly in Greek folk music, he entered in
1989 the composition program at Roosevelt University in Chicago with as teachers Robert
Lombardo and Don Malone. During the last eight years the emphasis of his work is focused
on creating a new repertory for his instrument and using its exotic sound as a means to bridge
the gap between contemporary music and uninitiated audiences. His stunning technique and
exquisite artistry has inspired composers around the world to produce a new repertoire with
acoustic and electronic works for mandolin and various instrumentations. He frequently
presents seminars, which have led to the development of innovative techniques through the
extensive new repertoire for the mandolin by eminent American and European composers.
